Southern Mid-Atlantic Navy
Nurse Corps Association (SMANNCA)
Interest in forming a chapter for those living in the Hampton
Roads Area began at the May 1996 Capital Reunion held in Northern
Virginia/District of Columbia. In September of that year, several
retired nurses gathered to become part of a chapter formation
committee. By the end of 1998 commitment and participation from
both retirees and active duty nurses living in the southern half
of Virginia resulted in completion of Chapter Bylaws and the submission
of a formal application in January 1999.
In May 1999, our application was approved by the NNCA Board
at their annual meeting. We rejoiced as SMANNCA became the 9th
"official" chapter of the Navy Nurse Corps Association.
Membership: Is open to all
retired, active duty, former active duty and reserve nurse corps
officers. It is required that chapter members also be members
of NNCA.
Meetings: SMANNCA holds a luncheon
and short business meeting twice/year. The fall meeting is designated
as our annual meeting and is held in the Hampton Roads Virginia
area. The spring luncheon is held in various locations in the
southwestern part of the Commonwealth. For example, Roanoke, Lexington
and Charlottesville.
Chapter Dues: SMANNCA membership
dues are $10.00/year. Members are encouraged to submit payment
along with NNCA National dues each spring.
Chapter Mission/Projects: In
support of NNCA our projects include:
- Awarding an annual scholarship of $1000 to a qualified nursing
student in his/her Junior Collegiate year.
- Fund raising projects provide monies for our scholarships.
One example is the SMANNCA store creatively managed by Peg Armstrong
and Juel Loughney. All proceeds go towards our scholarship fund
- SMANNCA's luncheons provide opportunity for all to socialize
and share current activities.
